Jul 1, 2015 · It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. I will re-set it with the Joe Reeves Method tomorrow to 30 degrees, that is, the Joe Reeves Method but minus 0 degrees. Hi there, I have a 1992 Johnson v4 outboard that I have a couple questions on. The engine runs great once started but when I start it up it has trouble in low idle. I would not say that you have too but you would see a performance gain as well as MPG increase. Had an ignition issue at end of last year and I replaced stator, timer base, powerpack and voltage regulator. Now, at idle forward it hovers around 650rpms which is great most of the time.
