One of my favorite Great Smoky Mountain National Park Facts is that, in 1540, Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto came through the Great Smoky Mountains. At the time, De Soto was the governor of Cuba. He landed seven ships with 600 men near Tampa, Florida.
